How we rate airlines

Each airline is scored in five areas: fatal accidents, safety oversight, security, maintenance and fleet, and finance. Risk points are given in each area using fixed rules, and the total sets the class.

Only the airline's own flights count. Accidents older than about ten years no longer add points. A fatal accident in the last two years, or a home country rated FAA Category 2, means Class 3 at best.

Class 1Good. Above average record, no major problems, sound finances.
Class 2Adequate. No major problems, but weaker in one or more areas.
Class 3Questionable. Several weak areas; safety, maintenance or finances in doubt.
Class 4Inadequate. Serious failings in two or more areas.

A class is a risk rating, not a guarantee. It reflects open-source information at the date of the report and is reviewed whenever an airline has a major accident, a security incident, a regulator action or a significant change in its finances.
